The Shortlist; an ace evening of pure talent for music lovers. This is one way to describe the intimate gigs gracing secret locations in London. If a night of live music, twinkle lights and an incredible view sounds like something you’re interested in then keep on reading.
The Shortlist founded by Andrew Htun is a monthly event taking place in locations around the city but this is no your ordinary gig setup. The element of surprise is very prominent as the location and line up is kept discreet until close to the date. Get ready to discover new artists as only the best of the best have been shortlisted hence the name ‘The Shortlist’ Genius! Each event has a theme and typically there is a line up of three artists performing on the night. Each one adding something fresh into the mix and it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll fall in love with live music all over again.
I was lucky enough to attend the first show of the year and I have to say it was brilliant! The best part of any gig for me is the atmosphere, the on stage banter and of course the music. You know you’ve been to a good gig when you leave on a high. This evening ticked all these boxes for me and more. Whilst Mass produced gigs in large venues are great there’s something unique about these shows that set them apart. They capture music in its purest form, keep you in the present moment and that feeling is priceless.
Authentic music at its finest and I couldn’t have asked for a better evening!
The evening started with a performance from Hanna Brooks who served up some hearty feel good acoustic music. With just her voice and her guitar she captivated the audience with her stripped back solo set, setting the tone for the night. There is so much depth in Hana’s voice and there’s something so heart warming about her transparency. If you love Alternative Indie music with real grit, you’ll love Hanna Brooks. It’s truly magical when a songwriter really gets into the hearts of the audience through their story telling. You can tell through her music and stage presence that she’s passionate about the driving force behind her music. ‘Tangerine’ written about her partner was one of my favourites of the night. I loved every second of Hanna’s performance; It was laid back and a treat for sure!
The second act of the night came from Duo GeeJay and what can I say other than they were jaw-dropping-good! Hailing from North London Gina Jane and Jacob Labo left everyone in the room mesmerised. Gina’s voice is so naturally soulful and Jacob on the keys is next level. Imagine this beautiful fusion; soul, funk, modern jazz & RnB all rolled into one. It’s no wonder they had everyone in the room in awe. They performed original tracks such as Vibrate and Horizon as well as covered ‘Flowers’ . Their rendition is so memorable you have to hear it! I’ve linked it for you here ~ you’re welcome.
The night ended on a high with a stellar performance by Jules Rendell. I featured Jules on the blog late last year and it was so lovely to finally meet her in person. As expected she smashed her performance with her beautiful melodies and lyrical style. Jules’ energy is infectious and it really shined during her set list. She performed tracks such as ‘Old Friend’ and ‘Epiphany‘ a new favourite of mine. It was incredible to hear her beautiful rendition of ‘Best Part’ by Daniel Caesar feat H.E.R. So smooth and soulful.
